Now in My Bookbag: Maude, by Donna Mabry

Maude is an biographical novel about the author’s grandmother. Though it is a long book, it is worth every moment spent reading it. From those whom Maude very first loved and lost, through her very last, I am drawn to her story. It is so very like my own grandmother’s life story.

It is based on the stories told to author Donna Mabry by her beloved grandmother. It is honest, recounts the good as well as the bad, and inspires a wide range of emotions. It is a story of love, loss, elation, and regrets.

Though this is Maude’s story, the rest of the characters truly come to life in Mabry’s recounting. I see each of the family members, and friends, through Maude’s point of view.

The circumstances and catalysts make for a compelling read. I spent every available moment immersed in this book. If possible, I would give this book 10 stars. Since that is not an option, I rate this emotional story 5 stars.

Now in My Bookbag: The Collectors' Society, by Heather Lyons

I love this book. It is original, imaginative, and well thought out.
The concept is amazing, and the plot is so appealing. I am beyond enchanted with this world created by author Heather Lyons. I can’t wait to start book #2, The Hidden Library!

These characters are ‘frabjous!’ I am completely taken with Alice. She is brave, fierce, and incredible! I am in love with Finn. He is completely swoonworthy. He is also brave, as well as kind, considerate, and loveable. In fact, all of the characters are detailed, complex, and interesting.

I have found a new series to feed my reading addiction, and it is The Collectors’ Society.

Now in My Bookbag: Luke's Dream (a Judgement of the Six Companion Novel), by Melissa Haag

What an exciting addition to the Judgement of the Six lexicon! This companion series is fascinating, and adds so much to the series.

Luke and Bethi are great characters, and an awesome couple. It is very interesting to dig a little deeper into Luke’s personality, motivations, and love. Author Melissa Haag does much to further develop the one dimensional Luke, from (Un)Wise, to the complex character, in Luke’s Dream.

Haag weaves a truly cohesive companion to Bethi’s story with the addition of Luke’s Dream. It is a page-turner, and I couldn’t put it down. 5 stars

Now in My Bookbag: In This Life, by Christine Brae

What a beautifully written, emotional rollercoaster! The story is wonderfully imagined. The feelings expressed, and drawn from me, are beyond compelling. It has been a very long time since a book has affected me to my core. The story is poignant, touching, and tear-jerking. I could not put this down.

The characters are perfectly imperfect. There is a lot of love, a lot of hurt, and a lot of grief. I never thought it possible to be happy for a character, while also being disgusted with them. Getting inside the heads of both Anna and Jude is very enlightening, though adding the point of view of Dante would add to the depth of the story.

I consider myself very lucky to have found this magnificent book. I am enamored of this story, and its author, Christine Brae. I look forward to finding more of her books, and I recommend this story to readers of contemporary books. 6 stars… (5 stars)

In My Bookbag: Hidden Wings, by Cameo Renae

I just noticed that I have no BlogSpot written review of Hidden Wings, by Cameo Renae. I am incorporating my existing Goodreads review, from 2014, to remedy this oversight.

This is the fantastic book that starts the phenomenal Hidden Wings Series. Drama and romance go hand in hand to make this an excellent read. The writing is imaginative and very well done.

Author Cameo Renae brings the wonderful characters, and exceptional story, to life. This is an awesome YA read that I highly recommend. 5 stars

Now in My Bookbag: Perfekt Balance, by S. T. Bende

What would happen to all of the realms if the Unifier-in-training couldn’t figure out how to keep everything in perfekt balance?

Elsa has no one to guide her, and she can’t seem to get the hang of it on her own. She can’t even get the matters of her love life sorted out. Forsee seems devoted to her, so why does he keep her at arms length?

Author S.T. Bende weaves yet another fascinating and exciting story that gets to the heart of these issues. She has a real talent for world-building that I truly appreciate, because she chooses her descriptive words wisely.

I like the way that Elsa is written. She craves Forsee’s love, yet she is not full of angst. She is smart, strong, and determined. Her loyalty never falters, even when her freedom is at stake.

The story is definitely full of surprises, and the action is exhilarating. The book is well-written, and I highly recommend this series. 5 stars

Now in My Bookbag: Love is Come, by Heather B. Moore

I am lucky to have received an advance copy of this book, and was asked only for an honest review in return. The opinions expressed here are my own.

I am absolutely captivated by this historical romance from the Power of the Matchmaker Series. Author Heather B. Moore does an impressive job creating a world that is complete with the attitudes and social norms of the time.

Moore also does a fantastic job making me feel Nelle’s story, which is heartrendingly sad, more so because of the treatment she receives from the family on whom she needs to lean. Her only consolations are the time spent with either Mathew or Pearl. She also finds solace in her music. This is totally relatable for almost every reader, even if they are not musicians. Music is universal in its ability to provide a release for what ails the heart.

Pearl’s efforts to unite Nelle with her match are hard fought, giving the story that much more interest. Her existence is of great import to Nelle, and I find that Pearl is written to provide humor and heart to the book. Moore makes me believe that the deep friendship between the two is as important to Pearl as it is to Nelle.

Finally, Moore gives Nelle a huge capacity for love and compassion, which is like a balm to the pettiness and disdain that Nelle must face throughout the story. I believe that she will become one of my favorite heroines from my plethora of books. 5 stars

Now in My Bookbag: Catalyst, by Casey L. Bond

This is a moving and very enjoyable book. I feel that author Casey Bond does a great job of weaving together the many elements of this story into a cohesive read.

With a very well thought out theme of a dystopian world in need of revolution, Bond exposes the ugliness of a corrupt and dangerous society.

Within this overall story, Bond addresses the topics of terminal illness, loss, and revenge. The heart of the story is Seven; she is also its strength, thanks to her friendship with Mitis.

The book provides many surprises, and I can say without exaggeration, it is a true page-turner. I highly recommend this book and believe that it will appeal to a wide array of readers. 5 stars

Now in My Bookbag: Clockwork Princess, by Cassandra Clare

This is one of my favorite ugly cry books. It is also an exemplary novel and a perfect ending to the Infernal Devices Trilogy.

The story is full of love, in all its forms. I adore these characters and, after reading this trilogy so many times, consider them friends and family. They are complex and completely relatable, even though they are fictional. I am so invested in these characters that elements of the story are heart-wrenching still, after all of this time.

Author Cassandra Clare builds a believable Shadowhunter world in the midst of 1800’s London. I always feel transported there, every time I read it. I will always recommend this trilogy as one of my favorites. 5 stars

The correct reading order of this trilogy is as follows: Clockwork Angel, Clockwork Prince, Clockwork Princess.

Now in My Bookbag: The Lie Tree, by Frances Hardinge

I was given an advance copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

What a phenomenal work! Books this exceptional are far too rare. Author Frances Hardinge has a special gift for prose.

Setting descriptions breathe life into Vane Island, from Faith’s first assessment of her new home, until the story’s last syllables are written. The characters are splendid in their complexity. This book is well thought out,  and so well written.

Hardinge outlines the mindset of the scientific naturalist, as well as the thinking of those more devoutly religious. The elegance of this story however, is its success in coloring all of the grey areas between the two. The Lie Tree is suspense and mystery, sins and absolution, self-righteousness and self-recremination.

This book is a fantastic find, one which I hope to share with as many discerning readers as possible. 5 stars

Now in My Bookbag: PERFEKT ORDER, by S. T. BENDE

I really enjoyed this book. It was a different take on Norse Mythology, and I liked the uniqueness of it. I thought that the incorporation of high tech gadgets, and interesting powers, gave flavor to the centuries old myths. I also liked the inclusion of actual major and minor gods, in addition to Valkyries and warriors.I loved the characters and found them very entertaining. I found Mia’s internal monologue funny and engaging, and I thought the story was captivating. Author S. T. Bende imagined, and wrote, an excellent book. Perfekt Control gets 5 stars
