Now in My Bookbag: Blooms of Consequence (The Dusk Gate Chronicles #4) by Breeana Puttroff

I really enjoyed this book and felt like the magic of the first book, Seeds of Discovery, was back. There was action, adventure and sheer determination of will. There was romance, love, loss and Quinn, the woman at the center of it all.

I was so excited to read this book and found that every page I turned felt like a continuation of this odyssey. I was so proud of Quinn. She was everything a heroine should be. William was, as ever, her Prince Charming. His love gave her strength. The families I loved, just as in Seeds of Discovery.

I felt that this series was perfect for a young adult reader.

This book created the conclusion of this story arc. There are additional stories to continue the saga including a follow up novella, A Christmas Rose, that occurs a few months after the conclusion of Blooms of Consequence.

New Teaser For Depravity by M.J. Haag

More Angst Than Action

Quinn’s story continues in Roots of Insight. Her dreams continue as she is drawn more and more to the gate. It seems Quinn is receiving breadcrumbs that lead to some undiscovered truth. This particular book shows just how much she loves the new ‘family’ she has on the other side. Unfortunately, her compulsion complicates her life on Earth in major ways.

In many ways, this book feels mostly like a bridge between Seeds of Discovery and Thorns of Decision. Quinn has no real insight. There is not a lot of action going on and the adventure factor is pretty low. It feels like Puttroff misses the opportunity to develop daring deeds surrounding the disappearance of Thomas. Roots is more angst than action.

Now in My Bookbag: Seeds of Discovery (The Dusk Gate Chronicles Book 1) by Breeana Puttroff

This book is very enjoyable and a treat for the imagination. There are many elements reminiscent of children’s fairy tales, though it is written for the young adult audience. It also provides an escape into a fantasy world for those in older demographics who enjoy the occasional light read from the YA genre.
The characters are very likeable, with one exception, and adventures are fun. Quinn, the main character, has a very inquisitive nature and feels compelled when there is a mystery to solve. William, another primary character, is an enigma. She can not control the urge to figure him out. There is even more to William than Quinn can image.
She is blown away when she discovers the truth. A whole new world, Eirentheos, opens before her. Quinn’s time with William’s family creates a lasting bond, and she is introduced to a side of him that she has never seen before.
Puttroff weaves an entertaining, fantastical tale of stepping into the imagination only to find that it is real. Through the content in Quinn’s dreams, and the hint that William’s parents are privy to some underlying knowledge, Puttroff creates a whisper of coming plot twists and revelations. This is a delightful read although, due to a specific plot point, this story is appropriate only for the older end of the YA spectrum and up.

Now in My Bookbag: Dawn (Harvester of Light Trilogy Book 3) by SJ West

This is a really good finale to the Harvester of Light Trilogy. I like the progression of the story very much and find the dynamic between Skye, Jace and the twins very engaging. I also find it heart rending to watch Skye struggle with what must be done. There are places in the book that feel very surreal to me, just as I assume they ‘are’ to Skye. The ending to the story is almost perfect.
The entire series is very enjoyable through the very last sentence of this final book. That is not something I say about every dystopian series I read. West hooks me from the beginning of Harvester and holds my interest throughout until the story completes at the end of Dawn.
I also highly recommend her Watchers Series to any who have not read it yet.

Now in My Bookbag: Hope, Book 2 in the Harvester of Light Trilogy, by SJ West

This book is the perfect complement to Harvester. It is full of unexpected twists and provides a lot of information that I feel will be important in Dawn, the third book of the trilogy. West delivers this information in a plausible and interesting way.

The first third of the book progresses at a fast pace with lots of action. It is also during this segment that Skye realizes some inconvenient truths. There is a lot of shock and awe here.

The second third of the book is the critical information gleaning stage. It includes shocking, heart aching decisions. Also, it is difficult to see just how cruel some people can be. It is also encouraging to see how unconditional love can be.

The final third of the book provides a lot of character development for Skye, and delivers Hope, and makes me cry… a lot. Grab some tissues and this book. It is truly a great read.

Excerpt of Depravity, Part 1 of the Beastly Tales
I wrapped my hands around the cold bars of the massive, black iron gate and glared after the smith’s sons, Tennen and Splane. The pair cast nervous glances back at me as they scurried away from the beast’s shadowy garden. They had locked me inside because of misdirected spite. It wasn’t my fault I’d seen what I had.

“This is what you get, Benella,” Tennen had said as he had pushed me into the beast’s lair.
Tennen thought his treatment just. However, the current situation was anything but just.
A strand of my dark hair, loosened from my braid by the encounter, fell across my cheek and partially obstructed my view of my retreating tormentors. I shook the hair away from my eyes and took stock of my situation.

Outside the gate, early morning mist floated around the trunks of the trees, and blue sky shimmered through the gently moving canopy. Inside the gate, neither the light mist nor blue sky penetrated the garden in which I stood. Cast in shadow and eerie silence, the beast’s domain welcomed nothing from beyond its walls.

Sides still heaving, I struggled to quiet my breathing. I needed to leave quickly. Tennen and Splane hadn’t departed quietly, and it wouldn’t be long before the creature came looking for me.
I studied the top of the gate. The iron should have been easy enough to scale, but vines climbed the rock walls and twined with the iron rods. I didn’t trust the vines. They tended to move on their own. I didn’t much trust the gate, either. It should have been closed and locked.

The birds outside the gate fell eerily silent, and my stomach gave a sickening twist as I realized I’d run out of time. I dropped my head and squeezed my eyes shut.

The beast had come.

Now in My Bookbag: Harvester (Book 1 of the Harvester of Light Trilogy) by SJ West

I love this book. It is well thought out and well written. It flows really well and keeps my interest from start to finish. I am a fan of West’s work and already have a vast amount of her books in my kindle library. I think her concepts are very interesting.

This book is different from most of her other work. It is a combination of science fiction and dystopian society. The main characters are very likeable/loveable. It starts with only Skye, Ash and Blue. They are a team of survivors. staying one step ahead of the Harvesters.

Eventually, Skye acquires Jace as a traveling companion. There is something different about him. They find Zoe, a little girl with a big secret. Along the way to the Southern Kingdom, it is hard to know who to trust.

Each situation is intriguing. Thier sojourn is fascinating. There are heart pounding moments and heartbreaking moments. It is hard to feel so much love and suffer so much loss, but it could be worse. There are moments of self-discovery and even a few moments of joy.

The ending to this story creates more questions than the entire book gives answers. I am officially obsessed with this series now. I can not wait  to see what happens next!

From My Bookbag: Champion by Marie Lu

Champion is my least favorite of the Legend trilogy. It is about trying to save the Republic and cure the plague. It deals with infirmity, mortality, insecurity, love and loss. There is a lot of focus on war strategy, though I am not quite sure the Republic’s strategy is sound.
The war plays out in a predictable way, and that is okay. However, all of the other things thrown in during the peak of the fighting take away from expected battle scenes. The build-up in the book all leads to war, so I feel that the clash between the Republic and Colonies with friends lacks depth.
Day chooses to keep a very important secret from June. In my opinion, doing so is selfish on his part. What does he think will happen to June when she learns the truth, in the way he expects? What a waste of time.

There are choices made by June that do not make sense either. Keeping the truth really gains nothing because eventually the truth will out. When it finally does, the wounds become fresh again. With truth, and a few years, grief becomes less palpable and forgiveness becomes possible.

With memory never encouraged nor restored, a person remains a victim of circumstance. I am not a fan of the way this book ends.

Next in My Bookbag: Dark Bishop Part 5: End Game by Authors Casey L. Bond and Rachael Brownell

End Game is suspenseful, dark and disturbing. It is very graphic and not for readers who are faint of heart. Jake is devious and scary. As a psychological thriller, it certainly hits its mark. Without revealing spoilers, it is difficult to truly express the feelings conjured by this novella. It is more than obvious that Bond and Brownell successfully evoke the feelings intended. They do a really good job developing Jake’s character even further. The lasting result? it’s a story that will bore into your psyche and stay there.

The Monster.
In one moment, my entire life was ripped away from me. I ignored the warning signs until it was too late. Until I became the victim. He took my life away from me; my freedom, my courage. I’ve lived my life in debilitating fear since that fateful day.

 The Savior.
He was there the day it all went down, and he’s been by my side ever since. He’s been the only thing that’s kept me going. He’s my best friend, but he wants more. I’m terrified to lose him. I’m terrified he’ll leave. One tried to kill me. One brought me back to life. I’ll never be the same person again–that girl died when the match was dropped. Too much has already been stolen from me. It’s time to take back what’s mine.
